Removals in Littlehampton: Parking Fees, Notice Periods and What a Move Costs

Removals in Littlehampton are mostly a parking question. The terraces between the town centre and the River Arun were built long before anyone owned a car, so a removal lorry usually has to stop in the street, and Arun District Council has just put up the price of keeping a space clear: from 1 October 2026 a bay suspension costs £45, up from £40. This page sets out what you can buy from the council, how much notice it needs, what a move in and around Littlehampton costs, and where the access problems are.

Bay suspension in Littlehampton: £45 standing charge from 1 October 2026 (was £40), no daily charge.

Dispensation to park on restrictions: £20 a day or £120 a week from 1 October 2026 (was £15 and £90).

Notice: at least 10 working days for a bay suspension.

Sign-written removal lorries: can park on certain restrictions without a permit; self-drive vans cannot.

Which council, and which charge applies

Littlehampton sits in Arun district, so on-street parking permissions come from Arun District Council, the same authority that covers Bognor Regis, Rustington, Angmering and the villages in between. Arun's fee tables name only Bognor Regis specifically: its town centre, The Esplanade, Marine Drive West and its Controlled Parking Zone. Everywhere else in the district, Littlehampton included, falls under the "all other bays" and "all other areas" rows, which are the simplest and cheapest.

Bay suspension or dispensation: they do opposite jobs

People ask the council for "a parking permit for the removal van" and are then surprised by what they get. Arun sells two different things.

A bay suspension closes a parking bay so that it stays empty. Arun's guidance is plain that once a bay is suspended no vehicle may park in it, and it is meant for access, scaffolding, skips and similar. One suspension covers up to two bays, a maximum of 10 metres. Yellow lines cannot be suspended. In Littlehampton the cost is a single standing charge of £45 from 1 October 2026; the daily charges on Arun's table apply only to the named Bognor Regis bays.

A dispensation lets a named vehicle park where it otherwise could not, on a restricted road while work is done at a nearby property. Removals is one of the purposes Arun lists. Outside the named Bognor Regis zones the price is £20 a day or £120 a week from 1 October 2026. The registration is fixed on the permit, so if your remover swaps the lorry on the morning, the paperwork no longer covers it.

The third route costs nothing. Arun states that sign-written removal vehicles are allowed to park where there are certain restrictions without penalty, and that this does not extend to any other type of vehicle, including self-drive vans. A liveried lorry from an established firm often needs no paperwork at all. A hired Luton driven by your brother-in-law gets no such allowance.

The timetable that decides your move date

Arun wants at least 10 working days' notice to suspend a bay. Late applications for emergency works are considered but not guaranteed, and must reach the council before noon on a weekday. In practice that means a suspension has to be booked roughly two working weeks out, which does not sit easily with an exchange and completion in the same week. Applications now go through MiPermit rather than a paper form, and the council asks for a map of the bay with the application. Anything paid is non-refundable if the move is cancelled or finishes early, so book once the completion date is firm, and if your firm's lorries are sign-written, ask them whether you need a suspension at all.

What a move in Littlehampton costs

The parking fee is small next to the move itself. As a guide for a local move within Arun, based on the ranges in our Sussex removal costs page:

  • One or two-bedroom flat: roughly £450 to £800 with a two-person crew, more with stairs and no lift.
  • Three-bedroom house: roughly £800 to £1,400 for a local move, rising quickly once packing is added.
  • Professional packing: commonly £250 to £600 on top, depending on volume and how much is fragile.
  • Storage between completions: usually charged per container per week.

Moves out of the county cost more because of the drive time; our long-distance removal costs page covers London and beyond. The quickest way to pin the number down is a survey, in person or by video, and our page on how to get a removal quote explains what a good one includes.

Where a big lorry struggles in and around Littlehampton

Three situations account for most of the extra cost on the day.

The older terraces near the town centre and the river. Streets are narrow, parked on both sides and often without anywhere to turn an 18-tonne vehicle. A firm that has seen the street will price a smaller vehicle or a longer carry; a firm that has not may add a shuttle charge on the day.

Seafront flats. Blocks along the front and near East Beach can mean a long carry from the nearest legal stopping point, plus stairs. Measure the distance from kerb to door and say whether there is a lift.

Newer estates and the villages. Closes and cul-de-sacs in Wick, Rustington and Angmering are easier for parking but can be tight for a large lorry to turn. Send the remover a photo or video of the turning head.

The wider market in Arun

The Land Registry's UK House Price Index put the average price paid in Arun at £321,460 in July 2026, an annual rise of 0.9%. A near-flat market tends to bring longer chains and later confirmation of dates, which matters because of the 10-day notice period. Book your remover on a provisional date, confirm once contracts are exchanged, and apply for the parking only when the completion date is fixed. If you are moving along the coast, our guides to removals in Worthing, removals in Bognor Regis and removals in Chichester cover the neighbouring towns, and the Move Sussex home page has the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a removal cost in Littlehampton?

A local move from a one or two-bedroom flat usually costs roughly £450 to £800 with a two-person crew, and a three-bedroom house roughly £800 to £1,400, before packing. Stairs, a long carry, a piano or storage push it up. Get written quotes after a survey.

Do I need a parking permit for a removal van in Littlehampton?

Not always. Arun District Council allows sign-written removal vehicles to park on certain restrictions without penalty. A self-drive or unmarked van does not get that allowance, and would need a dispensation, £20 a day from 1 October 2026.

How much is a parking bay suspension in Littlehampton?

Littlehampton falls under Arun's "all other bays" rate: a £45 standing charge from 1 October 2026, up from £40, with no daily charge. One suspension covers up to 10 metres, and yellow lines cannot be suspended.

How much notice does Arun need to suspend a bay?

At least 10 working days. Late applications for emergency works are considered but not guaranteed and must arrive before noon on a weekday. Applications are made through MiPermit with a map of the bay.

Can I get a refund if my completion date moves?

No. Arun says suspension charges already paid are non-refundable if you cancel or finish early, and changes need a fresh application. Apply once the completion date is fixed.
