Removals in Lewes: Costs, the £16 Bay Suspension and the Hill Problem
Planning removals in Lewes means solving two things the rest of Sussex does not throw at you: a town built on a hill with medieval alleys running off it, and a parking authority that is not the council whose name is on the bin lorry. Prices sit inside the normal East Sussex bands. What changes the day is whether the van can get within carrying distance of the door, and whether you applied to the right body for a bay.

What a Lewes move actually costs
Removal firms price on volume, distance and crew hours. The town you live in barely features, so Lewes figures sit inside the same bands as the rest of the county. For a local move under about 50 miles, with reasonable access, expect:

What pushes a Lewes quote up is almost always carry distance. A Georgian townhouse off the High Street with a shared frontage, a flight of stone steps and no space outside is a slower job than a post-war house on the Nevill or a new-build in Malling with a driveway. The crew is paid by the hour, so metres and stairs are money.
The bay suspension: the right council, the right fee
This is the part most people get wrong, and it costs a morning of phone calls on the worst possible week.
On-street parking in Lewes is run by East Sussex County Council, not Lewes District Council. The county council manages on-street permits, bay suspensions and penalty charge notices across the district. Applying to the district council gets you politely redirected.

Two practical points follow from that 5.5 metre bay measurement. A Luton van is longer than one bay once you allow room to open the tail lift, so budget for two. A seven-and-a-half tonne removal lorry needs three, and on some Lewes streets it will not fit at all, which is a conversation to have at survey stage rather than on the morning.
The county council considers each application individually, so apply early rather than at the statutory minimum. Completion dates slip, and a suspension arranged a fortnight out costs the same as one arranged at the last minute while leaving room to change the date.
Lewes is cheaper than West Sussex for this
Worth knowing if you are moving across the county line: Adur & Worthing Councils charge £40 per 10 metre bay, plus £10 a day for each pay and display bay suspended for the first 28 days, and require at least five working days' notice. Which Lewes streets are controlled
Lewes runs several controlled parking zones, and the hours differ, which matters when you are working out whether the van will be moved on mid-load.
- Zone A: 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
- Zones B, C, D and HS: 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
- Zone E: 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, with some areas Monday to Friday only.
- Bank holidays: charges do not apply.
Permit-only bays, disabled bays and taxi bays operate continuously unless the sign says otherwise, so a permit bay outside the door is not a free space at 7am. If there is a zone sign on the street, plan the van's position rather than hope.
The access problems worth flagging at survey
Give the firm the honest version before they quote. The things that change a Lewes job:
- The hill. High Street and School Hill drop steeply towards the Cliffe. A crew carrying a wardrobe downhill on a wet pavement will work slower, and a tail lift on a camber needs space to level.
- The twittens. The narrow alleys running off the High Street are charming and useless for a van. If your door is off one, measure the carry and say so.
- Keere Street and the cobbled sections. Steep, cobbled and narrow. Sack trucks do not roll on setts.
- Cliffe High Street. Pedestrianised for much of the day, so loading windows are restricted.
- Georgian conversions. Narrow stairwells, tight half-landings and sash windows that do not come out. Measure the sofa before the day, not on it.
The one date not to move
Do not book a Lewes move on or near 5 November. Lewes Bonfire closes large parts of the town to traffic from late afternoon, on-street parking on the affected routes is suspended from midday, and vehicles left after 2pm are at risk of being towed. Trains stop calling at Lewes, Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde and Southease from around 5pm until service resumes the next morning. In 2026 the fifth falls on a Thursday, which is otherwise a good weekday to move. It is not one in Lewes.

A price given over the phone from the words "a three-bed" is a guess. Insist on a video or in-person survey for anything bigger than a flat, and get at least three itemised quotes so you are comparing scope rather than headline numbers.
