Removals in Horsham: Costs, Parking Bay Suspensions and Local Tips
Booking removals in Horsham is mostly straightforward, with one exception that catches people out: the town centre. The district's Controlled Parking Zones are in Horsham and Billingshurst, and suspending a permit or pay and display bay there costs £40 per bay plus £10 a day, so £50 for a one-day move, with a minimum of five working days notice. Outside those zones, most of the district's villages and estates need nothing more than a quiet word with the neighbours about where the van will stand.

Parking: suspending a bay in the Controlled Parking Zone
Horsham District Council can suspend parking bays in the Horsham and Billingshurst Controlled Parking Zones for removals, building works, skips, weddings and funerals. For a removal, the pricing is:

Those figures are the council's own worked examples of the rate: £40 per bay, plus £10 a day for the first 28 days, rising to £20 a day for days 29 to 84. No suspension can run beyond 12 weeks. A limited waiting bay, the time-restricted kind found outside the permit zones, is a flat £35 per bay whatever the length. Loading bays, disabled bays and police bays cannot be suspended for a removal at all.
A standard suspension of about 10 metres, typically two spaces, is enough for most removal lorries. A Luton van needs less; an articulated or large rigid vehicle may need two bays. Ask your remover what it is sending before you book.
How to book, and the rules on the day
- Apply at least 5 working days ahead through the council's MiPermit portal, with the date, the location, the reason and your contact details.
- Signs go up about a week before. Depending on the type of suspension, the council supplies traffic cones the day before, and collects signs and cones the day after.
- Cancel with at least 24 hours notice or there is no refund. To change a booking, call Parking Services on 01403 215057 or email parking@horsham.gov.uk.
- It is for the removal only. The householder cannot use the suspended bay to park their own car, and a vehicle in the bay has to show its use is essential. Unauthorised vehicles can get a Penalty Charge Notice, but the council has no power to tow them away.
That last point is why the notice period matters more than the fee. The council's signs go up about a week early; knock on the doors of anyone who normally parks there, and the bay is far more likely to be empty when the lorry arrives.
When you do not need a suspension
The council's guidance is clear that vehicles can stop on yellow lines as long as they are not causing an obstruction and continuous loading or unloading is taking place. A suspension is not required for that. For a short, quick move where the van can sit on a single yellow line outside the door without blocking anyone, you may not need to pay anything. Where loading will pause for long stretches, or the only space is a residents' bay, book the suspension.
Tradespeople working at a property in the zone, such as a handyman assembling furniture after you move in, need a separate Parking Dispensation Notice: £15 a day in a permit area or £25 a day in a pay and display area, in both Horsham and Billingshurst.
Choosing a removal firm
Get at least three quotes, and insist on a survey, in person or by video, for anything larger than a one-bed flat. A price produced from a room count alone is a guess, and guesses grow on the day. Ask each firm to put in writing:
- its goods in transit insurance and public liability cover, and the sums insured
- whether dismantling and reassembling beds and wardrobes is included
- whether boxes are supplied, hired or extra
- what it charges for waiting time if completion runs late, which in a chain it often does
