Removals in Hastings and St Leonards: Costs and Parking
Booking removals in Hastings is cheaper on the paperwork than most of Sussex and harder on the geography. Two Hastings-specific things push a quote up its band. The first is height: a lot of the housing stock between the seafront and the West Hill is three and four storey Victorian, converted into flats, with a single shared staircase and no lift. A house move is a residential suspension, so a single day's suspension of one bay is £18.25 all in. That compares well with West Sussex authorities, where a bay suspension typically starts at £40. Note the 5.5 metre unit: a full-size removal lorry is longer than that, so budget for two bays if you want the vehicle properly clear of moving traffic.
The one thing East Sussex does not publish is a minimum notice period. Its dispensations and suspensions page says only that every application is considered on an individual basis and asks you to contact the customer service team, on parking.information@eastsussex.gov.uk or 01273 335500. Because there is no stated deadline to work back from, apply as soon as your completion date is confirmed rather than in the final week. Unauthorised vehicles parked in a suspended area get a penalty charge notice, which is the point of paying for the suspension in the first place.
Access: the streets that change the plan
Hastings has three access problems worth naming when you get a quote.
The Old Town. The lanes and twittens off High Street and All Saints Street are narrow, steep and frequently one-way, and some have no room for a large lorry to turn, let alone stand. Firms that work the town will shuttle from a legal standing point with a smaller van, which adds crew hours. Tell them the street name at the survey stage, not on the morning.
The West Hill and the Old London Road side. Steep gradients, terraces with steps up to the front door, and on-street parking that is full by early evening. If your move runs into the afternoon, the space you planned to use may already be taken unless it is suspended.
Seafront and St Leonards conversions. Grand-looking, and often three flights up a communal stair with a first-floor landing too tight for a two-seater sofa. A video or in-person survey catches this. A phone quote does not.
