Removals in East Grinstead: the Parking Zone, the Old Town and What a Move Costs
Removals in East Grinstead have one feature the rest of Mid Sussex mostly does not: a Controlled Parking Zone. Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath movers can usually pull up outside and start loading; in the centre of East Grinstead, the streets around the High Street and the station are permit bays and pay and display, and a lorry parked there without the right paperwork collects a ticket. Who runs the parking
On-street parking in West Sussex belongs to the county council, and Mid Sussex District Council runs it day to day in this district, including the permits a removal lorry may need. East Grinstead is the one town in the district with its own Controlled Parking Zone, and the county's published charges list it by name alongside Chichester, Crawley, Horsham and Worthing. On-street pay and display in the town centre was £1.60 an hour under the 2025-2026 charges.
Outside the zone, most of East Grinstead behaves like the rest of Mid Sussex: free residential streets, driveways on the post-war estates, and no permit needed unless the road is physically too narrow.
The two permits, and which one you want
A dispensation, to let the lorry park
A dispensation notice lets a working vehicle park in free limited waiting and permit bays, on yellow lines in special circumstances, or near a customer's property. Mid Sussex's own dispensation page says the charge varies if the road is inside the East Grinstead Controlled Parking Zone or in a pay and display bay. The published prices, last updated on 1 October 2025:

You apply online through the council's digital permit portal with the vehicle registration and the address and length of the job. The registration is on the permit, so if the removal firm swaps lorries on the morning, the permit no longer covers the vehicle outside. Ask the firm which vehicle is booked before you apply, or let them apply, which many do.
A bay suspension, to keep the space empty
A suspension takes marked bays out of use so nobody else parks there. West Sussex's 2025-2026 charges set a flat £40 for any bay suspension, plus a day rate of £10 on charged bays for the first 28 days. It is the stronger option on a busy street, because a dispensation gives the lorry the right to park but does nothing to stop a car taking the space first.
Check the price before you pay. The county's new charges notice, dated 10 September 2026, takes effect on 1 October 2026 and raises the same fees elsewhere in West Sussex: in Arun and in Adur and Worthing the flat bay suspension fee goes from £40 to £45 and dispensations from £15 to £20 a day. If your move falls after 1 October, expect Mid Sussex to follow and confirm the figure on the council page when you apply.
Where a lorry struggles
The High Street and the old town
The High Street is one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Sussex, lined with timber-framed buildings, and it sits in a conservation area. That means narrow pavements, no front gardens, kerbside parking on both sides and flats above shops reached by steep internal stairs. A move from a flat here is priced on carry distance and stairs rather than volume, and the survey should see the staircase.
The station and the commuter streets
East Grinstead is the end of the line from London on the Oxted branch, and the streets around the station fill with commuter cars from early morning. On a weekday a lorry arriving at 8am will usually find nothing to stop in without a permit.
The A22 and the Felbridge junction
The A22 runs straight through the town north to the M25, and the Felbridge junction, where it meets the A264 on the Surrey border, queues at peak times. A crew heading to London in the morning, or coming back in the afternoon school run, can lose an hour there. Most firms price that in; the ones that do not will bill for it.
Hills and closes
The town sits on a ridge, and several of the residential roads falling away from the centre are steep. Add the 1970s and 1980s closes with tight turning heads and you get the common East Grinstead answer: a smaller van shuttling between the door and a large lorry parked on the through road. It is slower, so it should be on the quote, not discovered on the day.
What a move from East Grinstead costs
Local moves inside the town are half-day jobs and sit at the bottom of the Sussex price range. Moves across Mid Sussex to Haywards Heath or Burgess Hill, or to Crawley, stay single-day jobs. - Stairs and carry distance in the old town, where there is no drive and no lift.

Timing the move
Book four to six weeks ahead for an ordinary date and longer for the last Friday of a month, which is the busiest completion day everywhere. Give the dispensation or suspension at least two working weeks. If the chain is unsteady, apply for the permit only once completion is fixed, because a date change means a new application.
