Removals in Crowborough: Parking Rules, Hills and Private Roads, and What a Move Costs
Removals in Crowborough are, on paper, simple to arrange: the town has no resident permit zones, so on most streets a van can pull up outside your door without any paperwork. What adds time is the ground: a hilltop town on the edge of Ashdown Forest, with steep drives, some private and unmade roads, and narrow lanes on the outskirts. This page covers who handles parking for removals Crowborough residents book, loading rules, and typical costs.
Who deals with parking in Crowborough
Crowborough is in Wealden District, and Wealden is one of the parts of East Sussex where on-street parking has not been decriminalised. Wealden District Council says it does not manage parking on the highway: that is the responsibility of East Sussex County Council, which sets the yellow lines and waiting restrictions, and Sussex Police, which enforces them. The district council runs only its own off-street car parks.
In practice this makes moving day simpler than in Lewes or Brighton. There are no resident permit zones in the town, so on most residential streets a removal van can pull up outside and load without any paperwork. The county's paid bay suspension service, at £16 per 5.5 metre bay plus £2.25 a day for a house move, is aimed at the marked bays it enforces in places such as Lewes and Eastbourne; our Lewes removals page covers how that works.
Restrictions do change. A county traffic order amending waiting restrictions on several Crowborough roads took effect on 23 February 2026. Walk your street and your new one a week before the move and read the signs.
Loading on yellow lines
In and around the town centre, many kerbs have single or double yellow lines. The Highway Code lets a vehicle stop on yellow lines to load or unload unless there are yellow markings on the kerb and upright signs showing loading restrictions. So a removal crew can usually load from a yellow line outside a town centre flat, as long as the kerb is not marked and they keep moving. Where there are loading restrictions, or the road is a busy through route, the crew may need to park round the corner and carry further, which belongs on the quote.
Where a removal van struggles in Crowborough
The hills
Crowborough is a hilltop town on the edge of Ashdown Forest, and much of it is on a slope. Steep drives and paths add time on both the carry and the loading, and a lorry may not be able to stop safely on a steep, narrow road. Mention the gradient when you book a survey.
Private and unmade roads
Some of Crowborough's roads, particularly among the larger houses, are private or unmade rather than adopted by the county. A 7.5 tonne lorry on a rutted or soft surface, or under low trees, is a risk the firm needs to know about in advance. Tell them if your road is private, and check whether the residents' association has rules on heavy vehicles.
Rural lanes and the forest edge
Homes in the lanes around the town, towards Ashdown Forest, Rotherfield and Jarvis Brook, often have narrow access and nowhere for a large lorry to turn. The usual answer is a smaller van shuttling between the house and a lorry parked on a wider road. It works, but it is slower.
The A26
Crowborough sits on the A26 between Tunbridge Wells and Uckfield, and most moves north towards Kent or London, or south towards Lewes and the coast, start on it. There is no motorway nearby, so allow for slower road times than the mileage suggests, especially in the morning and school-run peaks.
What a removal from Crowborough costs
Firms price on volume, distance, access and crew hours. Crowborough prices sit inside the same bands as the rest of East Sussex. For a local move of under about 50 miles with reasonable access:
| Property | Typical local move | With full packing |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or one-bed flat | £300 to £600 | Add a few hundred |
| Two-bed house or flat | £400 to £900 | Add a few hundred |
| Three-bed house | £600 to £1,400 | Often £1,300 plus |
| Four-bed or larger | £900 to £2,000 and up | Higher again |
Treat these as ranges to check a written quote against, not fixed prices. Crowborough has plenty of larger detached houses, and those moves sit at the top of the bands or above. Our Sussex removal costs guide explains how each band is built. Moves to Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, East Grinstead or Lewes are normally single-day jobs; moves to London are priced on distance and crew time, covered in long-distance removal costs.
Three things move a Crowborough quote more than the mileage:
- access: steep drives, private roads and the need for a shuttle van;
- the size of the house, which in Crowborough is often larger than the Sussex average for the same number of bedrooms;
- packing, still the biggest optional line on any quote.
Getting quotes you can compare
A price given over the phone for "a three-bed" is a guess. Get at least three written quotes from firms that have surveyed the property, in person or by video, and check each one covers the same things: materials, dismantling and reassembly, insurance and any shuttle van. Our guide to getting a removal quote explains how to line them up, and questions to ask a removal company lists what to check before you sign.
Book four to six weeks ahead for an ordinary date, and longer for the last Friday of a month or the school summer holidays. Our page on how far ahead to book removals has the detail. Moving nearby? See removals in East Grinstead, or go back to the Move Sussex homepage for the rest of the county.

Usually not. Crowborough has no resident permit zones, so on most residential streets a van can park outside and load without paperwork.

On-street parking in Wealden has not been decriminalised, so East Sussex County Council sets the restrictions and Sussex Police enforces them. Wealden District Council runs only its own car parks.
Can a removal van load on double yellow lines?
Generally yes. The Highway Code allows loading and unloading on yellow lines unless there are yellow kerb markings and signs showing loading restrictions.
